Poupart's Bakery (French King Cake) - Lafayette

Poupart's French Style King Cake.
Poupart's Bakery is a Lafayette tradition dating back to the 1960s when the Poupart family brought their French baking techniques to Acadiana and the region has rejoiced ever since.  The pastry chefs at work here craft some of the finest breads and treats in all of Louisiana!

Poupart's stays true to its French roots by offering the only "French King Cake" in the region.  The French King Cake is a sophisticated cake of golden layers of light and flaky pastry dough filled with a homemade almond cream (similar to marzipan).  To release its true potential this cake should be warmed in the oven prior to serving.

These cakes are as light as air -- and you'll see why when you cut into it.  The overall sense of this cake was that it tended to be a bit too dry and ours may have even been somewhat overcooked. Compare this to the mass of a Meche's king cake and you'll see the two opposite ends of the king cake spectrum in Lafayette.
Filled with almond cream.
